Freight Rebate Scheme
The Freight Rebate Scheme (FRS) has been introduced by the Government of Mauritius to enhance competitiveness and catalyse exports in the Indian Ocean and African regions, promoting a commercial feeder shipping facility in Africa for lower costs and reduced transit time. The aim is to boost export activities, support smaller exporters and create a more competitive export environment in the region, benefiting various stakeholders involved in international trade.
Valid until 30 June 2024, the scheme offers rebates of 25% to eligible applicants based on their container type and size. The rebate covers specific components of ocean freight costs and is capped at Rs 5 million yearly per applicant. To be eligible, you must hold a Freeport Certificate and export eligible products either to an eligible port or through an eligible port to a landlocked country.
Eligible beneficiaries are exporters with an annual turnover of less than Rs 500 million. Trading entities purchasing eligible products for export are also eligible. Exporters from Rodrigues to Mauritius may qualify under certain conditions.
